Neighbourhood Corners Al-Amari refugee camp

This project is in coordination with TDH and funded by the European Commission.
Cooperation with TDH started in 1997. So far this includes 2 extensive projects spanning almost 7 years.

Phase II of this project started in May 2003 and will run until May 2006. The overall objective of the project is to empower young people at Al-Am’ari Refugee Camp. Specific objectives of the project include the deepening of child and youth educational access, strengthening existing youth focused committees and organizations and increasing youth-initiated project development capacities. These objectives are a direct result of the Terre des Hommes / Bisan experience in Al-Am’ari Camp in the past and the knowledge gained through this experience. Continuing this experience specifically in Al-Am’ari camp will lead to significant benefits for an exceptionally marginalized young community that has had of yet little access to services, and especially in the past two years, exceptional experiences with violence.

Ativities implemented in the course of the program :

  • Strengthening lessons : we provide Arabic and mathematics lessons for selected children from the 2 UNRWA schools who suffer from problems in these areas.
  • Family assistance : the project social worker conducts different types of activities aimed at supporting the social and psychological aspects of children in the camp.
  • We provided English lessons for youth and children.
  • Reproductive health workshops were organized.
  • Institutional capacity building : different types of interventions are being conducted to support the existing board and committees of al-Amari youth club in order to increase the capacity of the center as a whole in providing quality services in the camp.
  • A computer room has been equipped with 12 computers and with an internet lease line in order to provide cheap internet access to children and youth of the camp.
  • Computer courses are being delivered to proved pc skills and knowledge for different levels
  • Cinema animation : The project has equipped a big hall with modern cinema projector and sound system. Also the project purchased different types of educational and entertainment films for youth and children. Part of these films are being played to different groups of youth and children followed by a discussion of the films that focused on different themes to increase awareness on these themes.
  • Sports : The project supports the Al-Amari Center in providing different sports items such as shoes, uniforms, basketball and volleyball equipment. We supported a sports trainer that provided football and basketball training.
  • Youth training in ideas development : In this training a group of youth is being trained in how to develop an idea into a community project.
  • Project implementation : Youth participated in youth training, they will compete for receiving grants to finance the projects developed during training. Upon receiving the grants the youth will manage and implement their projects themselves.
  • Teacher training : Some teachers form the 2 UNRWA camps participate in special training aimed at providing active learning skills which will help in replacing the existing classical teaching into a more modern approach increasing participation of the students.
  • Tawjihi review lessons : The project delivers lessons for highschool “Tawjihi” levels set for the official examination.
  • Issues-related workshops : Youth and children participate in workshops in order to discuss issues of their concern that directly affect their lives. In these workshops they analyze causes and effects of certain issues.
  • Voluntary campaigns; The project organized in participation with the Al-Amari Youth Center two voluntary campaigns per year in different areas such as cleaning of the camp, streets, walls, helping old people etc.. Planting trees.

Impact :
Because of the diverse activities throughout the project hundreds of youth and children participated in the activities of the projects in addition to the existing activities of the centers. More youth and children were familiarized to the youth center and a large majority were enrolled in the planning and implementation of other activities of interest to children and youth in the camp. Indicators of changes in beliefs and ideas among youth and children were noticed due to the special awareness workshop conducted.
